New Pattern: Log Cabin Shawl

The holidays are almost here!  I didn't knit any Christmas presents this year, so I have spent my time knitting for myself.  I now have two versions of my new pattern, Log Cabin Shawl, to keep me cozy in the cold and damp weather.  This pattern is a result of some major experimentation with modular knitting.  Each unit (square, triangle or rectangle) is worked on it's own and joined with the previous section.  The major bonus of modular knitting is that this shawl can be as big or small as you want.  The simple Garter stitch stripe creates a substantial fabric that will keep you warm.

The Log Cabin Shawl is constructed with striped modular squares, triangles and rectangles. It is begun at the corner triangle and can be made to any size in any weight of yarn.  Pictured are two versions; a 2 color sock weight version and a multi-color worsted weight version. The worsted weight version is made with one ball of yarn for the main color and leftover bits of other colors. The worsted weight version shows the optional crochet edging.

MATERIALS
Sock Weight Version: 800 yards total of sock yarn; 2 colors with 400 yards each.
Worsted Weight Version: 220 yards for Color A, 220 yards mix of yarns for Color B.

NEEDLES
Use a needle size appropriate for the weight of yarn. Samples used:
Sock Weight Version: US #4/3.5mm 40” circular needle.
Worsted Weight Version: US #9/ 5.5mm 40” circular needle.

NOTIONS REQUIRED
tapestry needle to weave in ends
crochet hook for edging (optional). Use size equivalent to knitting needle size.

GAUGE
Exact gauge is not vital for this project. Use a needle size appropriate for the weight of yarn which creates a Garter stitch fabric that you like. The following gauges are from my samples:
Sock Weight Version: 22 sts and 42 rows= 4” in Garter stitch.
Worsted Weight Version: 14.5 sts and 28 rows= 4” in Garter stitch.
