Bearfoot Yarn Review and Giveaway!

I have recently received a couple skeins of Mountain Colors Bearfoot, one to try out myself and the other to give away!

Here is the technical info about the yarn:  Mountain Colors Yarns Bearfoot (60% superwash wool, 25% mohair, 15% nylon); 400yds per 100g skein.

When I first opened the package I was struck by two things:  the intense saturation of the colors and the incredible softness of the yarn.  The colors I received are Harmony Sunset (wine/rust) and Lupine (royal/purple/green).

The yarn has a bit of a halo to it, due to being 25% mohair.  Though this is intended as a sock yarn, I’m not much of a sock knitter, so I can see this being great for fingerless gloves, cowl or shawl.  With 400 yards in a skein, I could definitely make a good sized shawl for myself.

I decided to try out a variety of stitch patterns in the Harmony Sunset skein.  I used a size US 2 needle, but, being a very loose knitter, it is probably closer to a size US 4 for a more ‘average’ knitter.  I worked up my swatch in Stockinette stitch, a knit/purl texture, simple cables, and simple lace.
Picture
In my opinion, every type of stitch pattern looked awesome.  The yarn has a slight halo from the mohair, but it doesn’t affect the stitch definition at all.  Bearfoot is an awesome powerhouse yarn that could handle a wide variety of projects.  Soft enough to be next to the skin, and firm enough (thanks to the nylon) for hardwearing socks.  Since I’m not much of a sock knitter, I think I’ll use the remainder of my skein for a cowl in some sort of lace texture.
Picture
So, the Lupine colorway is up for grabs!  Who wants it?  Leave me a comment and tell me how *you* would use this yarn, and I’ll pick a winner at random on December 6th.

Big thank you to Mountain Colors Yarns for providing this gorgeous yarn!

I would definitely make a cowl, in a lace. It would be perfect to wind around and keep my neck warm!

I really, really love Bearfoot. I think the mohair adds a certain durability. I'm not much of a sock knitter either but I'd love to make socks with this yarn!

I would use this lovely yarn for some fingerless mitts for myself. I know they would be nice and warm since I already knit a pair with Bearfoot for my son in Colorado!

I love Mountain Colors - have made scarves for myself and family with 'Mountain Goat' and 'Huckleberry', and agree the stitch definition is great, and it knits up soft and comfortable to wear. I'd probably make and hat and wristwarmers!

MC Bearfoott makes the best deep winter socks I have ever had. They are my "go to socks" when the temps hit -35 degrees F. This is absolutely the best!

I think definitely a multi-textured shawl would be great. With the lace weight, it could be scrunched for neck/scarf wear. I love the idea of an item having varied use, so the seasons it can be used are extended.

I LOVE Mountain Colors yarns. Started with Twizzle and off I go adding more and more. Just looked at Lupine today at Studio S. The colors in it are perfect for a scarf to go with my pea coat. (Have Bearfoot on my needles in Blackbird and it is awesome to knit.)

I would weave a wonderfully soft and light weight scarf with it. I would use the Bearfoot for the warp and a very sort and light weight mohair for the weft. I have used this fiber combination frequently and the Mountain Colors colors do wonderful things on my loom.

Like you, I would normally use this in a cowl/shawl/scarf, but I think this time I would go with socks. I have never knit socks with any blend of mohair and just thinking about the "cozy factor" of this makes me say socks!
